Sounds of the World: My Contribution to the Opening of Fenix

On May 15, 2025, I had the honour of being invited to lead the musical segment of the official opening ceremony of the Fenix Museum in Rotterdam. The event was graced by the presence of Her Majesty Queen Máxima, who, alongside museum director Anne Kremers, officially inaugurated the museum with a symbolic gong strike.

Music as a Bridge

For this special occasion, I curated a performance featuring seven percussion instruments, each representing a different continent. From the Daf of Asia and the Tabla of India to the Conga, Timpani, and Drums, and even the Harp, whose ethereal tones symbolised the icy expanse of Antarctica. Each instrument brought its unique sound and cultural heritage, coming together in a harmonious symphony that reflected the diversity and interconnectedness of humanity.

A Personal Connection

As a resident of Rotterdam, a city renowned for its cultural diversity and rich migration history, this project held deep personal significance for me. The Fenix Museum, situated on historic docks where countless journeys began or ended, tells the stories of millions who passed through these shores. My musical contribution was a tribute to these narratives and a celebration of Rotterdam's vibrant cultural mosaic.

Collaboration and Inspiration

This project was realised under the artistic direction of Rajiv Bhagwanbali and supported by the Droom en Daad Foundation. Their vision and commitment to sharing migration stories through art and culture are truly commendable. It was a privilege to collaborate with them and contribute to this meaningful opening.

A Vision for the Future

I hope this opening marks the beginning of an ongoing celebration of cultural diversity in Rotterdam. May the city continue to evolve as a place where different cultures converge, understand one another, and create something beautiful together. Just as the sounds of the percussion instruments formed a melody, so too can the diverse voices of our city come together to build a harmonious future.
